2008–2010 Church of Madonna del Sasso, Invillino
Restoration project of the Church of Madonna del Sasso in Invillino, Villa Santina
A Gothic jewel and rare complex of sacred art, the church represents a focal point of historical events from the 15th century to the present day and a place of connection for the mountain communities of the area. The architectural approach treats the building as a living organism, requiring numerous coordinated interventions that respect the cultural, historical and environmental context.
The conservative restoration project included protection of the structures and artworks from humidity, replacement of more recent internal flooring with local grey Carnic stone, and the overall upgrading of the religious complex to current regulations. A new internal and external lighting system enhances both the spaces and the artworks. A series of precise and discreet interventions ensured proper conservation through the use of traditional materials and techniques.
During excavations for the new cobbled external pavements, a section of an ancient Roman road was discovered; it was restored and brought to light within the surrounding landscape to preserve the historical value of the site.
